The Meta title is by far the most important factor in on-page SEO. Stepping back a moment, remember that there are two types of SEO – On-Page and Off-Page. the On-Page SEO is the factors you control within your own website that will attribute to an increase in rankings with the search engines for your targeted keywords.
Now getting back to the Meta Title, some of you may actually not be familiar with what a Meta Title even is. A Meta Title is actually the title of a particular page on your website. It is not a title that is actually embedded into the content of a page, rather the document title, so to speak. So if you open any web browser and navigate to any page on the internet, the first thing that should appear on your browser in the very upper-left corner of the page is the title of whatever page you are on – this is generally right above the website address bar in your browser.
If you do a search in Google for any keyword, you will get pages and pages of results. Each result starts with a blue link in bold letters, followed by a description below. This Blue Link is actually the meta title of the corresponding page. So the purpose of the meta title is twofold – it is useful for telling the search engines what the topic of your page is, and it is also useful for telling searchers what your page is about, and hopefully convincing them to click on your list.
The Meta Title is contained in the HTML HEAD tag, and should be unique on every page of your site whenever possible. The Meta Title should ALWAYS contain your exact keyword – generally you want to start the title with your keywords, but at least try to place them as close as possible to the beginning of the title. The Meta Title tag should never just be a list of keywords, rather it should read more like a sentence, and it should be added in Title Case, meaning the First Letter In Each Word Capitalized. You should also avoid using any kind of punctuation whenever possible.
There are many factors to think about when optimizing your site for search engines, but by far the Title tag is the most important, so do yourself a favor and make sure you take a moment to write a nice title for each page!
